MANATEE COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- As student enrollment increases, so does the need for teachers.
Manatee Technical Institute has hired several new instructors to accommodate the increase in student enrollment.
MTI officials say more than 4,000 students enrolled in the 2008-2009 school, a 24 percent increase compared to the year before. The school hired eight instructors in the last few months.
"Our students range from high school to adults, so sometimes it is challenging but it makes the job interesting," said Ed Adamski, who was just hired about a month ago.
Most of the positions are part time. New instructors say they hope to eventually become full time employees.
"Right now, my job is contingent on the amount of new students," said new hire, John Beck. "The reason I'm here is because of the new students but unless funding changes I'm part time."
MTI is still hiring specialized positions for both its Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch campuses.
State College of Florida had a record high enrollment this fall with 12,000 students. As a result, the school hired 14 full time faculty members for the fall semester.
