PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The proceeds from a calendar featuring women of a certain age will go to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Bay News 9 tagged along for a photo shoot for the 'Cougars of Clearwater Beach' calendar.

The women range in age from 41 to 60 years old.

"There are several (definitions of a cougar)," said Kathleen Slaven, one of the calendar organizers. "But it's any woman over 40 that has a huge aptitude for life, takes care of herself."

"It's just a neat, neat concept," said Clearwater Marine Aquarium CEO David Yates. "They called us out of the blue and said we'd like to donate the money to you. We said, hey we'd love to do it."

The idea is gaining popularity in Pinellas County.

"We're actually getting phone calls from women saying, 'you know what, we want to start a cougar chapter in the different beach areas,'" Slaven said.

The calendars cost $12 and will go towards a new exhibit for Winter, the dolphin without a tail.

"We've been raising funds for Winter's new exhibit for the last year and a half," Yates said. "We're about a $125,000 short of that right now."

The aquarium hopes to open the new exhibit by the end of the year.

"We've already put in about $2 million in the back area of our building for a combination of Winter's new exhibit plus a new area for rehab turtles and rehab dolphins," Yates said. "It's kind of a combined project."

The calendar will go on sale December 1, just in time for the holidays.

'It's a great Christmas gift, too," Slaven said. "We'll be doing signings all the girls at the different establishments as well,"

Initially, 1,000 copies will be printed. The calendar can be purchased at various Clearwater Beach businesses and at the aquarium.
