PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The teenager who was shot and killed in the parking lot of a Clearwater apartment complex Friday night has been identified by police as 17-year-old Alvin Toney.
The incident occurred about 9 p.m. at the Park Place Apartments located at 340 Fairwood Ave.
According to reports, Trenton Williams, 18, had heard Toney was trying to sell a gun.
Investigators say Williams orchestrated a robbery to take the gun from the victim.
When Toney reportedly tried to run from the situation, police say Williams shot him several times.
He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries.
Police had originally been looking for at least two suspects, but took Williams into custody shortly after 5 a.m. -- charging him with first degree murder.
Toney's family members said that they didn't believe he owned a gun, and that he was a senior at Countryside High School.
"That's ridiculous," said Toney's brother, Telong. "By no chance he had a gun. He was a full-time student. He didn't have a job, and he was home the whole day before the shooting occurred. If he had a gun they would have found a gun on him or in the house, and we had our house searched and there was no gun. By no means he would have had a gun."
Toney moved to the United States a few years ago from Liberia and planned to join the military after graduation.
Damion Porter, who lives at the same apartment complex as Toney, said he heard the gunshots and later found out who was killed.
"I considered him a friend," Porter said. "I didn't know him for long, but he would give me the shirt off his back."
