TALLAHASSEE (Bay News 9) -- Adoptive parents like Ron and Fran Fahs went through a lot of paperwork in order to get a little one.
One question that's asked of prospective parents is now prompting a bill before Florida state legislature.
"Do you own a gun?"
The Fahs say while they aren't necessarily firearm supporters, they do feel that question goes too far.
"Let's just stay with responsible parenting and issues that are involved in that," Fran said.
The National Rifle Association is now pushing for laws against asking that controversial question, according to Marion Hammer, who heads up the Florida chapter.
"This is almost a profiling of adoptive parents," said Hammer. "They don't want to be profiled. They don't want to be treated differently because they choose to exercise a constitutional right."
The Fahs agree with the NRA and say they would support the passage of a law banning the gun question.
At least one adoption agency -- The Children's Home Society - says it has temporarily stopped asking about gun ownership.
According to an agency spokesperson, it is waiting on clarification from the Department of Children and Families about the legality of the question.
