SARASOTA (Bay News 9) -- When a Sarasota church chef learned that some families in the community couldn't afford a Thanksgiving dinner, he decided to take action.
Chef Ric Ricciardi made it his mission to collect one thousand turkeys in order to help those less fortunate.
Ricciardi teamed up with the All Faiths Food Bank last year to collect enough money and donations for 800 turkey dinners.
"This was a good opportunity for us to do something simple," said Ricciardi. "Get the word out. All you have to do is bring a turkey in, and paper turkey's are just as good as the real thing."
The food and holiday treats will be handed out the week of Thanksgiving in the Sarasota area.
Right now, Ricciardi says he is about 200 turkeys short of his goal.
