PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by a car at Ulmerton Road and 38th Street, authorities say.

The victim was taken to Bay Front Medical Center with head trauma.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the pedestrian was walking with a group of friends along the south shoulder of Ulmerton Road.

The pedestrian attempted to cross the road but then doubled back. For unknown reasons the pedestrian stopped in the middle of the road. As a result, a Porsche driven by B Gray Gibbs, 53, hit the pedestrian, the FHP said.

The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
