Seasonal work could turn into fulltime work.

BAY AREA (Bay News 9) -- Those wanting seasonal jobs this holiday season may get their wish.

A Careerbuilder.com survey suggests this year's seasonal employment is projected to be similar to last year but there's more competition for jobs.

"Whatever will pay the bills until the next job comes up," said Maurice Davis, who is looking for a job.

Deb Mikels, a retail manager for Cracker Barrel in Clearwater, says she's noticed a difference this season.

"The biggest thing this year is there are a lot more people looking for jobs so it's making it easier to get quality people that what we've seen in the past, because there are so many people looking for jobs," Mikels said.

The survey also says 31 percent of the managers questioned would hire a seasonal employee fulltime. Mikels says it happens in her store.

More Information

"I have a hostess working right now who started here last year as a seasonal employee at Christmas as a gift wrapper for me," she said.

Davis says seasonal employment would not only help him get through the holidays, but also buy him some time.

"You gotta do what you gotta do to make ends meet, but long-term, permanent employment is really the goal," he said.

The survey also suggests 12 percent of people already employed will look for seasonal work to supplement their income during the holidays.

The survey says customer service, retail sales, administrative and hospitality positions are the most common seasonal jobs available.
