POLK COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Roadside billboards are supposed to garner attention, but one in Polk County is also raising some eyebrows.
It's at the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Martin Luther King, and it's sponsored by Atheists of Florida.
The group says it wants to let other atheists know that they are not alone, and that they can contact like-minded people online.
"It's always been ‘I wish we had known about you earlier,'" said President Rob Curry. "I wish I knew you existed, because I feel like I am all alone."
Atheists of Florida is planning to hold chapter meetings in Lakeland, and the sign has prompted quite a response.
A street preacher by the name of Anthony was seen calling out to people passing by to "believe in God," and several others were seen looking at the sign.
The billboard is expected to stay up until mid-January.
