BAY AREA (Bay News 9) -- As Hurricane Ida pushes into the Gulf of Mexico, the seas are getting rough.
Fishing crews at Madeira Beach are already feeling the effects. The storm forced them to come in, dock and wait it out.
"It's coming. It's nasty out there, especially offshore," said fisherman Kevin Long. "You can really feel it out there -- 20-foot seas."
Long is one of the many commercial fishermen who came back Sunday to escape the weather.
But with less time on the water, the fisherman can't make as much money.
Long says even though they're stuck on land for now, they still have to work to protect their livelihood.
"We will be taking care of our boats. It's a lot of hard work people don't realize it. You know, you have to be prepared for something like that. It's not a joke," Long said. "It's hard work."
Bay News 9 meteorologists will continue to monitor Ida to see how the storm will affect the Bay area. Watch Weather on the Nines to find out the latest.
