CITRUS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The Inverness Airport in Citrus County is getting a serious makeover.
The county is looking to an airport extension to bring in new business around the city.
When phase one and two of the plan are done, the runway will be realigned and extended.
"A little growth here would be wonderful," said Donna Hutzelman, owner of The Country Diner that is right down the road from the airport.
Once the airport improvement project is done, the county wants to create a business park nearby. A business park could mean more hungry customers.
"It would be incredible for all the surrounding businesses," Hutzelman said.
Quincy Wylupek, the project manager, says the idea is to make things similar to the airport industrial park in Hernando County.
Businesses can set up shop and have a runway nearby for small jets.
"A terminal building, hangers and a future fuel site, it's all going to be focused down to the south of the airfield," Wylupek said.
County leaders say if everything goes according to plan, phase one should be done by spring and the entire project should be done with in a year.
The FAA is funding 95 percent of the project.
The remaining five percent of the cost is being split between the county and the Florida Department of Transportation.
