PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A St. Petersburg man is more upset about losing his cats in a fire than he is about losing his house.
The mobile home where John McNally, Jr. lived with his 11 cats burned down late Thursday night.
McNally was taking care of his mother at her house at the time.
Neighbors called 911. By the time crews put out the flames the home was a total loss.
Only one of his cats have been found alive. Firefighters found two of the cats dead. Neighbors say the others could have been trapped inside.
"When I first come over I heard a bunch of them screaming, hollering, meowing," said Leroy Duone. "It kinda really hit me in a hard spot to hear them."
McNally hopes some of them escaped.
"Let me put it to you this way, one of my cats lived to be 22 years old," he said. "They were family."
McNally's neighbors say they'll keep watch in case any of them turn up.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The home was not insured. McNally plans on living with his 82-year-old mother.
