Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail for his role in the hoax.

MANATEE COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The parents of the man who carried out the balloon boy hoax asked the judge for leniency for their son and his wife.

Rae Sprow, who lives in Bradenton, said she wrote a letter to the judge, asking him to go easy on Richard and Mayumi Heene.

"I still stand behind my son and know that he will use the time he spends in jail as an opportunity to learn and grow from the experience and become a better person," she said.

The judge sentenced Richard Heene to 90 days in jail, including 60 days of work release. His wife was sentenced to 20 days in jail.
