PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The fire prevention bureau is now investigating a blaze that may have been sparked by a candle.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, deputy Gerald Mason was driving home from work when he noticed smoke coming from the one-story apartment building in the 1100 block of Broadway Blvd around 7 a.m.
Mason reportedly called dispatchers about the fire and stayed on the scene to help residents.
Firefighters discovered flames coming from a single unit occupied by a 54-year old woman and her 19-year-old son.
The woman reportedly woke up when she heard a crash coming from the patio, and both she and the teenager exited the apartment.
Additional deputies proceeded to evacuate the surrounding apartments.
Broadway Blvd. was closed in both directions at Pershing Street while crews were working.
Officials say the building received significant damage.
