HERNANDO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The business of taking care of animals is taking a hit due to the slow economy in many parts of the country, including Hernando County.
Animal Services manager Liana Teague says that factor is causing a lot of stress on her staff.
"It's really sad right now," says Teague.
Since October, Animal Services has removed about 150 animals from three private shelters in Hernando County.
That means that employees are working later to care for the animals, and space is at a premium.
"We just try to make room wherever we can," says Teague. "For example, with the first case we made room in the garage for some birds."
Dogs at Teague's facility are doubled up in their kennels as employees race to find them a good home.
But regardless, supervisor Patrick Pace says that the work is still rewarding.
"You're removing animals from a situation where they're not flourishing and not safe," said Pace.
According to Animal Services, more people are giving up their pets with the higher rate of unemployment.
Officials recommend that if you are having a difficult time caring for your pets, the best plan of action is to contact a shelter or Animal Services for help before the situation turns into a case of animal neglect.
