ST. PETERSBURG (Bay News 9) -- A St. Petersburg woman who caught on fire Saturday night is now being treated for severe burns on her head, face and neck.
According to reports, the mother of the 46-year-old victim came into her living room and saw her daughter, engulfed in flames, lying on the floor in front of a burning fireplace.
Rescue crews said she used her house coat to put the flames out, and then applied two quarts of aloe vera gel to her daughter's burns before the paramedics arrived.
Officials said the victim had second- and third-degree burns on her head, neck, face and legs, covering nearly one-third of her body.
She was taken to Tampa General Hospital by helicopter for treatment for her burns. Her condition is listed as critical.
Fire officials and detectives are unclear as to how she was burned but they said they believe it was accidental. They are investigating the situation.
