HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A group of English springer spaniels that were saved after their owner burned his kennels have made their way to Florida.
A breeder in Missouri set fire to his own buildings about two weeks ago leaving the dogs helpless, so animal rescue groups stepped in to care for the dogs.
"He had 200 dogs just running in his yard indiscriminately breeding," said Susan Zuker with English Springer Rescue. "He just let them breed and breed and breed, and he sold puppies to support himself."
The animals received days of medical attention. A total of 20 of the dogs were brought to Florida. Twelve of them were brought to Tampa Bay. Most of them will be ready for adoption in about one to two weeks.
"When rescuers went in to rescue them in Missouri, they were sitting in the embers of the house to keep warm because it was snowing and raining," Zuker said.
"They're not in horrible shape, no. Some of them are in better shape than others. They're very unsocialized. You can see she's skittish on the leash."
Jim Hutching adopted one of the rescued dogs named Gracie.
"They're very smart dogs, doesn't take a whole lot of training. They handle very well," Hutching said. "They're very friendly."
All the spaniels have been spayed, neutered and vaccinated. The adoption fee will be $250.
"We had been told they were feral, and not exposed to people at all," Zuker said. "So we're really happy that they're as nice as they are."
