MANATEE COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- More and more people like 20-year-old Dakota Slentz are walking into armed forces recruiting offices these days.
Slentz says he wants to go into law enforcement but he can't afford the schooling. So, he recently joined the Air Force to help pursue that dream.
"Along with the benefits it's great pay and it's great experience, so it's well worth it," Slentz said.
Technical Sgt. Greg O'Conner says Slentz's story is a familiar one these days in Manatee County.
"With the way the economy is, recruitment is up," he said. "I get dozens of calls every day and walk-ins from young men and women interested in joining the Air Force."
O'Connor says his office is busier than ever. He says he's signing a variety of people who either can't find a job or can't afford to go to school.
O'Conner says while most companies are laying off, the Air Force is hiring, providing a steady income, health benefits, free housing and more.
"The Air Force provides a solid career with over 150 jobs, the opportunity to have your college paid for and travel the world," he said.
To join the Air Force you have to be between 17 and 27 years old. You also can't have a criminal record. Other branches of the military like the Army and Marines accept older applicants.
