HILLSBOUGH COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Schools are considering renovation over demolition to save construction costs in a time when budgets are tight.
Ruskin Elementary School decided to renovate the existing school, rather than tear down and rebuild.
A new wing was added to handle the school's growth.
School tech specialist Richard Griffin says everyone seems to be satisfied with the results.
"It seems to have worked out real well," Griffin said. "We haven't taken occupancy of the new addition yet, but teachers have been in to take a look. They're really excited about it. They're just tickled."
The school district says the project has saved money for the district.
The new Bailey Elementary School in Dover cost $12.5 million to construct.
The renovation and expansion project at Ruskin Elementary School cost about $8 million, more than one-third less than the cost of a new construction and allowed the school to get rid of its 31 portable classrooms.
A district spokesperson said the five year construction plan includes no new school constructions for at least three years, but numerous renovation projects are planned.
"I think it's a little easier for the entire staff to go this route," Griffin said, "Rather than perhaps opening the whole thing at once."
He says if it saves money too, then all the better.
