Vaughn Hayes, with his wife, Katie, passed away Friday evening.

NEW PORT RICHEY (Bay News 9) -- A young New Port Richey father who was in a coma after a transmission fell on him has passed away.

Vaughn Hayes, 21, was in a medically-induced coma at the hospital after the transmission of a semi fell on him. He died Friday evening.

His wife, 19-year-old Katie Hayes, is left to take care of their two children, 2-year-old Courtney and 4-month-old Vaughn.

A fundraiser that was planned for next Saturday is still scheduled to take place. The money raised will help take care of Hayes' medical bills. It will also help Hayes take care of their two children.

This was not Hayes' first battle for his life. Eight years ago, he survived non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Doctors told him the chemotherapy would prevent him from ever being a father. He won that battle as well.

The fundraiser will be held Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Superior Style and Sound on State Road 52 in Hudson.
