Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio unveiled the city's new "Welcome to Tampa" sign on Dale Mabry Highway just north of Hillsborough Avenue on Tuesday morning.
The city's transportation division is preparing to install 14 of the signs at different sites throughout the city. They are intended to promote Tampa's professional sports team and evoke civic pride while serving as a gateway to the community.
"We are a very special city and we have a lot to be proud of and one of the things that we are proud of is our professional sports teams," said Iorio. "We just have outstanding professional sports teams and a large fan base and we're proud of them and we've won every major championship there is, well other than the World Series I suppose."
The previous "Welcome to Tampa" signs were installed in the early '90s.
