Overnight fire at St. Pete apartment complex
Friday, January 27, 2006
An overnight fire in St. Petersburg has left 16 apartments on 24th Street South damaged.
Investigators said the two-alarm blaze started about 1:00 a.m. in one unit on the first floor of the Flagler Point Apartments and spread quickly inside the walls to other units.
Firefighters evacuated families. After they put the fire out, they made sure the fire didn't ignite again.
"I set up a fire watch for the rest of the night," St. Petersburg Fire Rescue District Chief Michael Moore said. "There'll be one engine onscene all night long. They'll continue to watch the fire apartment and all the adjacent apartments to make sure everything stays cool."
Moore said fire damage in half of the units were not severe. Once the investigation is complete some of the families can return to their apartments.
There is no word on how the fire started.
