A warning today about a popular epilepsy drug. The results of a recent test show taking Topiramate alone... or with other epilepsy medicines increased the risk of birth defects. Some of the babies born during the testing had cleft palates or cleft lips, others had genital birth defects. This study found that more birth defects occurred in women taking Topiramate along with the drug Valproate, or Valproic acid, than in women taking Topiramate and another epilepsy drug. Research has shown that Valproate is associated with a high risk of birth defects. If you're concerned, check with your physician before stopping your medication.
