Appeasing the Sweet Tooth

Sugar is absorbed by the body quickly.

The American Heart Association recently released new recommendations on limiting intake of added sugars.  But eating less sugar may be easier said than done.

To fight those sugar cravings it helps to understand what causes them in the first place.

We tend to crave sugar when we are hungry because it is absorbed quickly. Skipping meals is a common trigger.

Try starting your day with a bigger breakfast.  If you get hungry and need a snack, grab a piece of fruit or light yogurt .

A handful of nuts is also great. They contain fat, protein and fiber than can satisfy you for hours.

If you are looking for a sweet dessert after dinner, trying chewing gum instead and go for a walk.  Mild exercise will increase the serotonin levels in the brain, giving you the same effect as sugar.
