  • Many students honored already have received college scholarships
  • "An Evening of Champions" will air again on June 17, 19, 21

The event was held Thursday night at the Straz Center.

"It's so amazing when you have athletes who are doing things right, who are up early, out late because they're practicing, not only because they're having fun but because they're practicing to be outstanding in their sports, so at Spectrum Sports and Spectrum, we're very happy to honor them," said Alan Mason, Vice-President, Spectrum Networks.

More than 75 student athletes and coaches are being singled out this year for what they've accomplished in a variety of sports.

Malik Davis was being recognized for his football career at Jesuit High School.

"I mean, it's a blessing," Davis said. "I just thank God and I appreciate everyone who has supported me this far and I'm just excited to be here."

Loren Perez, a golfer from Bartow Senior High, also received one of the awards.

"That's what I've grown up doing is just playing sports," she said. "I love being outside, I love playing with a team but golf is definitely my sport."

Many of the students said they've already received college scholarships, and they're excited about taking their athletic skills to the next level.

"An Evening of Champions" will be rebroadcast on Spectrum Sports on Saturday, June 17 at 8 p.m., Monday, June 19 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, June 21 at 2 p.m.
