St. Petersburg has a new mayor after well-known incumbent Bill Foster lost to challenger Rick Kriseman Tuesday night.

“I can say I’m leaving this city better than it was four years ago,” Foster said in his concession speech.

Kriseman won with 56 percent of the vote. The former state legislator had the support of most of the City Council.

"Friends because of you, because of thousands of residents who believe in a better St. Petersburg, our campaign was successful, and our city's future is brighter than ever," Kriseman said.

Foster said he will meet with Kriseman sometime this week to discuss the transition.

In a phone call, Foster said he congratulated Kriseman and jokingly told him, "she's all yours, don’t break her."

Foster said he's looking forward to "being a husband again and a father whose daughter is getting married in 10 days."

Kriseman is expected to announce his transition plans Wednesday morning.

St. Pete voters also decided on four city council seats. The winners were:

District 2: James Kennedy
District 4: Darden Rice
District 6: Karl Nurse
District 8: Amy Foster

Taking the podium at Red Mesa Cantina downtown, Darden Rice thanked her volunteers, supporters, and her partner Julie for their help during the campaign.

"We are so excited, we are ready, I am ready to go to work for the good people of St. Pete, we had a message we took it to the people and just excited to get to work,” she said.

Supporters congratulated Amy Foster at her party at Ricky P's restaurant. She said it feels good to win so many votes and she has a lot of plans for St. Pete.

"You know from the beginning the campaign’s always been about creating safer neighborhoods, building jobs and making sure that we help prepare our next generation of leaders and so those are the first places we're going to start,” Foster said.

Both Kennedy and Nurse won by wide margins.

Meanwhile in Clearwater, voters passed the Clearwater Marine Aquarium referendum, opening the door for a new aquarium to be built.

Also, both referendums passed in Kenneth City and Belleair Beach.
