The new Citrus Ridge Academy in Polk County is having growing pains.

According to parents -- many of whom live less than two miles away from the school -- it's taking way too long for their children to get home every afternoon.

School gets out at 3 p.m., but concerned parents say it is often past 4:30 p.m. before their children arrive at their subdivision.

“It’s very frustrating because it’s hot,” said LaDonna Younger, who picks up her special needs grandson. “It’s really hot out here and I have other things to do as well.”

“It’s very frustrating because you are sitting here waiting,” added Anita Webber.

Another complaint of family members? Communication is apparently lacking.

“Two hours and I don’t know where my daughter is,” said Joseline Sanchez. “ And if you call the school they don’t answer.”

Leaders at the Polk County School District said they're aware of the complaints and are working to resolve the transportation issues at Citrus Ridge Academy. They also said school bus driver shortage is a factor.

To help curb the issue, the school will be implementing colored wrist bands to get students loaded onto buses faster. The accessories would also help make sure the students get on the correct bus.

“It’s a new school," said Young, "and it sounds like it’s going to be a good school, but transportation is going to cause people to leave."
