A charter school up for approval by the Hernando County school board Tuesday night withdrew its application shortly before the meeting.

  • Chehuntamo Advanced Performance HS would specialize in AP classes
  • Team grilled by board members at Tuesday meeting
  • Charter school may reapply in future

The proposed school, Chehuntamo Advanced Performance High School, would specialize in AP classes and would be open to students with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

The team working to get the school up and running says the charter school would help advanced students who they say are underserved in the county's current high schools.
But school board members aren't so sure a school like that is needed.

During a workshop Tuesday afternoon, board members grilled the charter school's team with questions about its budget, staffing choices including a lack of a school resource officer and nurse, and teacher pay and benefits.

The board also highlighted current performance standards for advanced students at the county's current high schools.

The school board's attorney says after the comments made at the workshop, the proposed charter school decided to withdraw their application although he did say they may reapply at a later time.
