A University of South Florida football player who was injured in a weekend shooting now faces charges as part of the investigation.

Hassan Childs, 22, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Childs was shot once in the upper body and twice in the arm Saturday night at the Eagles Point Apartments at Tampa Palms in what police described as a road rage incident. Childs was listed in stable condition Monday morning at a hospital.

Police said the incident began about 11:15 p.m. on Skipper Road. Jovanni Jimenez, 26, was driving home with his wife and son when, according to police, he noticed a Chevy Malibu tailgating him and attempting to pass him.

The Malibu was being driven by Childs, police said.

Jimenez pulled into an apartment complex to let the vehicle pass. Police said Childs pulled to the passenger side of Jimenez's vehicle and said that his wife saw Childs pointing a silver firearm toward their vehicle.

Jimenez continued to drive toward his apartment, and, according to investigators, removed a gun from his waistband and placed it on the seat next to his leg.

Police said Childs continued to tailgate, and this time pulled to the driver's side of Jimenez's vehicle and pointed a handgun.

"In fear of his life and his family's life, Jovanni Jimenez fired three rounds at Childs," police said in a news release. "Childs was shot in the upper right arm, torso and beneath his arm."

Jimenez then drove home and called 911, police said.

Police said both Jimenez and Childs have concealed weapons permits.

Monday afternoon, the school released a statement: "The University of South Florida is aware of the arrest of student-athlete Hassan Childs.  Childs is currently withheld from all football-related activities for an indefinite period of time.  When the university learns of an arrest, the student involved may be subject to discipline in accordance with USF’s Student Code of Conduct.  State and federal privacy laws protecting the confidentiality of student records, including disciplinary actions, prevent the university from commenting further about the matter involving Childs."

Childs also faces a drug charge because police said cannabis was found in his vehicle.
