St. Petersburg Fire Rescue along with Bayfront Health, John Hopkins All Children's Hospital, and St. Petersburg Police Department are hosting a distracted driving awareness campaign for high school students.

  • St. Pete Fire Rescue hosts distracted driving seminar for high-schoolers
  • Seminar to educate students on consequences of distracted driving
  • Seminar held Mar. 10 at St. Pete Catholic High School

They hope to educate students on the impact and consequences of distracted driving.

Students will hear first hand the consequences caused by poor judgment from guest speaker, Derrick Jenkins, 24. In 2013, Jenkins lost both his eyes and suffered traumatic brain injuries after driving his motorcycle drunk and slamming into a construction truck.

Jenkins wants other people to learn what the mistake cost him and his family.

Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of deaths for teens and St. Pete Fire Rescue hopes this event will prevent distracted driving in the community and promote safety.

The seminar will be held Friday, March 10 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at St. Petersburg Catholic High School.
