According to Tampa Fire Rescue, the fire broke out just after 5 a.m. at the Knollwood Manor Apartments, located at 2932 Rockaway Court.

There were no injuries and the fire was brought under control by 7 a.m.

Fire investigators said the fire originated on the outside of the enclosed patio of unit 2930 and extended upwards into the eaves, spreading to the common roof.

The fire caused extensive damage throughout ten units.

Damage to the building and contents is estimated at more than $350,000.

Firefighters reported smoke and flames shooting through the roof of the two-story structure upon arrival. A quick assessment after crews arrived resulted in the response being increased.

The flames and smoke gutted about 75 percent of the 12-unit concrete block structure. A portion of the roof collpased on the building but no flames reached adjacent apartment buildings.

One tenant said she was awoken by the sound of her smoke alarm. Other tenants spread the word to ensure everyone got out safely. Crews were able to contain the fire to the single building without damage to surrounding structures.

The American Red Cross was notified and will be assisting displaced residents.

"The damage to the building is significant," Penny said. "But anytime we can save lives and (prevent) more property damage, that's a plus."
