Hillsborough County's newest teachers went back to school July 17-18 to make sure they're ready for the upcoming school year.

  • 2-day program designed to equip teachers for success
  • 550 new teachers joining Hillsborough school district for 2017-2018
  • District currently has 380 vacancies

Hundreds of new teachers took part in sessions at the Hillsborough Educator's Institute at Gaither High School. The two-day program is designed to equip teachers with the tools they need to be most effective in the classroom.

One new teacher, Priscilla Perez, said the training was helpful.  She'll teach second graders next year at Tampa Bay Boulevard Elementary.

"I hope they will look back and they'll remember me and I hope I can make an impact on them," Perez said. "Some of them I know have rough lives. And if you can just make a difference in their lives, even if it's one day, that's what I want to do."

There are 581 new teachers joining the Hillsborough County Public School District this year. The district has 380 classroom vacancies.

School starts August 10th.
