  • Local activists call for removal of statue at Manatee courthouse
  • Activists to hold rally Monday night on removal

Local activists are calling for the removal of the Confederate Monument located downtown.

The 93-year-old monument sits outside the historic Manatee County courthouse. A Confederate flag is at its side.

It up to the county commission to have it removed.

Activists hope to persuade them with a protest Monday night.

Due to recent, similar events around the nation that have erupted in violence, the Manatee County Clerk of Court has decided to close the office and library at 1 p.m. on Monday as a safety precaution for the customers and employees.

Office hours will resume as normal on Tuesday.

County commissioners are urging rally participants to remain peaceful and respectful.

They will be discussing safety measures for the rally today.
