Gas prices are still falling at the pump, dropping at a rate of about a half cent a day, according to AAA.

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $1.83. Officials say that’s seven cents lower than a month ago and 21 cents lower than this time last year.

Crude oil prices are the main contributor to discounts at the pumps, experts say.  A barrel of oil dropped to $26.55 on Wednesday before climbing to $32.19 on Friday, the highest since Jan. 8 of this year.

“Oil prices dropped like a rock last week, and took gas prices with them,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA.

But that drop could be short lived.  Some speculators believe the gas price drop could come to an end if oil prices gain solid ground.

"Even if oil remains the same, gas prices could start inching up in the next couple of weeks as refinery maintenance season begins,” Jenkins said. “This is a time when refineries do routine upkeep on their machinery, which slows their output. Because of this, we've seen gas prices rise 50 cents between February and June."

The average price of gas has remained less than $2 a gallon for 23 days in Florida.
