The calf was delivered Saturday evening by a 16-year-old Commerson's dolphin named Ringer, which is one of four that lives at Aquatica. The calf showed signs of distress soon after birth and was unable to be resuscitated by animal care and veterinary teams, SeaWorld announced on its parks blog.

Ringer came from SeaWorld San Diego to the Orlando park in January 2016. She'd had four previous unsuccessful pregnancies, and this latest one was unexpected, SeaWorld said. She has been under 24-hour observation for the past month. She is still under constant observation by caretakers and is not on display at the park, the company said.

Commerson's dolphins are one of the smallest species of dolphins and are also referred to as "panda dolphins" because they have black-and-white markings similar to orcas.
