Universal's plans to turn Wet 'n Wild's former property into thousands of hotel rooms got the green light by the Orlando City Commission on Monday.

Universal Studios recently purchased the property and asked the city for it to be rezoned, allowing it to turn the former water park site into a place where up to 4,000 hotel room will sit.

A Rollins College marketing expert says the project will be massive and could be a huge boost to tourism in the International Drive corridor.

"You will have a big impact with the construction, both good and bad, because the construction will create some havoc," Rollins marketing professor Mark Johnston said. "But it will also bring jobs and a lot of activity to the area. Once this complex is open, it will bring a huge amount of activity."

Universal was mum on specific plans for the site.

"The material we shared with the city was preliminary and conceptual. We’re excited about the future of this site, but not yet ready to share specifics."
