During the overnight, the Senate rejected the Republican's so-called "skinny repeal" of the Affordable Care Act.

This was the last resort for Senate Republicans to pass something to trigger negotiations with the House. The vote was 49 to 51, the tally coming in shortly after 1:30 a.m., Friday.

In an early morning tweet, President Donald Trump reacted to the Senate vote:

The so-called "skinny repeal" bill would have repealed the Affordable Care Act's individual and employer mandate and temporarily repealed the medical device tax.

Republican senators John McCain, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined with Democrats to oppose the measure.

Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the vote "disappointing."

"Now I'd imagine many of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle are celebrating, probably pretty happy about this but the America people are hurting and they need relief," he said.

McCain stated in a tweet that a repeal of Obamacare failed because there is nothing "meaningful" to replace it with.

"… send the bill back to committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of aisle ... produce a bill that finally delivers affordable health care for the American people," McCain announced in a statement on his website.
