Florida Gov. Rick Scott ordered all K-12 public schools, state colleges and state universities to close from Friday through Monday, but now that Irma has left the area, school districts will decide what next steps to take.

Public and private K-12 schools

Pine Castle Christian Academy in Orlando will be closed through Tuesday. Classes will resume Wednesday, it said.

Osceola County schools will remain closed through Tuesday, Sept. 12. All 12-month employees should check with their supervisor on Monday afternoon to determine their status for Tuesday. Essential personnel may be needed to assist with campus readiness. At this time, the Osceola School District has determined that make up days for students will not be required.  

Flagler Schools Superintendent James Tager announced Saturday that all schools are closed on Tuesday, Sept. 12.  

Orange County and Seminole County schools will be closed through Tuesday, Sept. 12, the districts announced Saturday. Brevard Public Schools says its schools will be closed until further notice.

Volusia County will be closed through Tuesday and Wednesday so power can be restored and damage can be assessed.

Many schools in the state serve as emergency shelters, and the governor wants districts to be prepared to open as needed.

“Today, I am directing the closure of all public schools, state colleges, state universities and state offices for their normal activities effective Friday through Monday, to ensure we have every space available for sheltering and staging. Floridians are facing a life-threatening storm in Hurricane Irma, and every family must prepare to evacuate. Our state’s public schools serve a vital role in our communities as shelters for displaced residents and staging areas for hurricane recovery efforts. Closing public schools, state colleges, state universities and state offices will provide local and state emergency officials the flexibility necessary to support shelter and emergency response efforts.”   

Lake County Schools will remain closed until further notice.

Marion County Public Schools will be closed through Tuesday due to Hurricane Irma.  

Sumter County schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 11-12, according to the school board.

Private schools may be remaining open Friday, so check with your school beforehand.

Windermere Preparatory School says it will be closed on Friday and Monday. School officials will notify families of when classes will resume once a damage assessment is complete.

Colleges and uiversities

The University of Central Florida will remain closed through Wednesday, Sept. 13. The campus will reopen Thursday and classes will resume.

Valencia College will resume normal operations Friday, Sept. 15. All faculty, staff and students should plan to follow their normal schedules.

Seminole State College will remain closed through Wednesday.

Classes will resume Thursday at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical School in Daytona Beach.

Full Sail University will stay closed through Tuesday, with plans to return to normal operations on Wednesday.

Rollins College says students with any questions or concerns should call 407-646-2345. A campus clean-up day will be held on Wednesday. Information is forthcoming. Faculty and staff should expect to report to campus Thursday, with classes to resume Monday. More information can be found on the Rollins College website.

Stetson University plans to remain closed through at least Wednesday. Until Duke Energy restores power, the school does not know when the DeLand campus will open. The school is encouraging people to check its Facebook page for the latest information, or call 386-822-8815.

Bethune-Cookman University issued an emergency evacuation order for the campus by Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. The announcement was posted on the school's Twitter account. No update has been sent out yet.

Nova Southeastern University plans to have all campuses in Florida and Puerto Rico open on Monday, Sept. 18. go to the Nova website for updates.

Florida Technical College is canceling classes in all of its Central Florida campuses starting Friday and through Monday. The school says to check the FTC website for updates.

All Keiser University campuses, including online, grad school and the chancellor's office will be closed through Tuesday, Sept. 12. Classes will resume Wednesday.

Daytona State College is closed through Wednesday. All classes, including online classes, and activities are canceled during that time. Hotline for updates: 386-506-4357.

Lake-Sumter State College will be closed through Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Eastern Florida State College will remain closed through Wednesday.

Classes will resume Thursday at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne. 

In addition public schools, colleges and universities, area theme parks and attractions have also announced closures.
