Actor and director Kevin Smith is recovering in a hospital after what he says was a "massive" heart attack.

  • Filmmaker Kevin Smith suffers major heart attack
  • He canceled show after feeling sick, went to hospital
  • He said his father died of massive heart attack

The filmmaker tweeted late Sunday that his doctor said he would have died if he hadn’t canceled his show to go to a hospital.

Also known for his comedy, Smith said he felt nauseous after his first show of the night filming his stand-up special. He said on Facebook that he started “sweating buckets,” and his chest felt heavy.

Smith’s left anterior descending artery was completely blocked. That is the artery also known as the “widow-maker” because as Smith said, “when it goes you’re a goner.”

Still having a sense of humor about the situation, Smith said in the tweet that “for now, I’m still above ground.”

Smith is known for the movies "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Dogma," and "Jay and Silent Bob."

On his Facebook page, Smith said the crisis taught him a lot about himself.

“But this is what I learned about myself during this crisis: death was always the thing I was most terrified of in life. When the time came, I never imagined I’d ever be able to die with dignity - I assumed I’d die screaming, like my Dad (who lost his life to a massive heart attack). But even as they cut into my groin to slip a stent into the lethal Widow-Maker, I was filled with a sense of calm. I’ve had a great life: loved by parents who raised me to become the individual I am. I’ve had a weird, wonderful career in all sorts of media, amazing friends, the best wife in the world and an incredible daughter who made me a Dad.”
