A Florida Highway Patrol sergeant was hit and killed in the line of duty Saturday evening.
- Sgt. William Trampas Bishop died from his injuries
- He was 30-year-veteran of FHP
- Bishop was hit while investigating crash in Alachua County
Sgt. William Trampas Bishop, 52, of Lake City, died at Shands Hospital.
FHP said Bishop was outside of his vehicle and investigating a crash on State Road 93 in Alachua County when he was hit by another vehicle.
Another person involved in the crash, John C. Sams of Lady Lake, was taken to Shands Hospital.
"We are heartbroken to learn of the death of 30-year veteran FHP Trooper Sergeant William Trampas Bishop while on duty in Alachua County," said Gov. Rick Scott.
"Every day, Florida’s law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect and serve Florida families. This terrible loss is a somber reminder of the work our brave law enforcement officers do to keep us safe," Scott said.
