Legoland Florida is throwing its name into the virtual reality ring.

  • Legoland to debut virtual reality coaster in 2018
  • Project X coaster to transform into Great Lego Race coaster
  • Riders will race Lego characters

The Winter Haven theme park will transform its Project X roller coaster into The Great Lego Race VR Coaster, which is set to debut next year.

While wearing VR headsets, riders will be placed in the driver’s seat for an “exciting, high-octane” race through a world made of Lego bricks.

The revamped attraction will feature racers pulled from a lineup of Lego minifigures such as Surfer Girl, Pirate Captain, Trendsetter, Pharaoh and Wizard.

As riders enter the attraction, they will be met with the sounds of roaring engines. The ride’s queue will feature a space filled with pit crews for the Lego racers as they prepare for the competition. Hands-on activities will also be added along the queue.

“The Great Lego Race was inspired by the way kids play with Lego toys at home,” said Candy Holland, senior creative directors for Merlin Magic Making. “It’s a unique Lego adventure that lets kids enter an epic imaginary world made entirely from Lego bricks, featuring a host of different themes and fun Lego characters, all mixed up together.”

Riders will be able to experience The Great Lego Race coaster without a VR headset if they choose.

Legoland isn’t the only theme park adding virtual reality experiences. SeaWorld Orlando debuted a redesigned Kraken coaster, Kraken Unleashed, earlier this year. Last year Fun Spot added VR headsets to its Freedom Flyer attraction.

The Great Lego Race VR Coaster is set to open spring 2018.
