Volusia County Sheriff's Office detectives are trying to find the person who killed a veteran on Veterans Day in Deltona and they are offering a reward.

Investigators say Carlos Cruz Echevarria was trying to be a Good Samaritan when he was shot on Malaga Avenue and Puritan Street Saturday.

Sheriff’s investigators believe Echevarria, of Deltona, was actually trying to help someone who was stuck in the mud in a vehicle when he was shot and his truck was used to flee the scene.

When deputies discovered Echevarria, he had a gunshot wound and no pulse.

Deputies later determined the vehicle that was stuck was stolen.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is offering a reward of $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the killing of Echevarria, who was an Army veteran and married for 34 years.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Volusia Sheriff's Office at 386-248-1777 or the Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
