Volusia County Council voted Thursday to double the fee for driving and parking on Daytona Beach from $10 to $20.

The fee is set to increase in January.

  • Volusia beach driving, parking raised to $20
  • County residents can get a $25 annual pass
  • County says the money will be used for beach improvements

Council Chairman Ed Kelley says raising the fees will bring in an additional $4 million per year for beach improvements.

The county will open seven additional ramps, with more workers at tollbooths and lanes for annual passholders only.

"The idea is that it is going to eliminate the lines," Kelley said. "The additional revenue will allow us to do that, it will allow us to make the experience better for people that come to the beach."

Volusia County residents will be able to buy annual passes for beach parking for $25, as opposed to $100 for out-of-county residents.

Local college students will also be eligible for the resident-priced annual passes.

The money can be used for beach improvements that include upgraded bathrooms and cleanup efforts.

Last year the county sold 388,006 daily passes to park on the beach, 29,573 resident annual passes and 1,818 non-resident annual passes.

Handicapped visitors can also get complimentary passes.
