Law enforcement in Central Florida will crack down on drivers on Wednesday who fail to yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.

  • Operation Best Foot Forward designed to keep pedestrians safe
  • Drivers must always yield at crosswalks
  • Since operation started, more than 7,000 citations, warnings given out

The project called Operation Best Foot Forward has been trying to keep pedestrians safe with high-visibility enforcements.

On Wednesday, undercover officers with the Orlando Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff's Office will stop drivers who fail to yield at intersections.

More than 50 crosswalks are being monitored by more than 300 law enforcement details.

Drivers must also yield, even if there are no pavement markings at the crosswalk.

According to Best Foot Forward, since the project started in 2012, more than 7,000 citations and warnings have been given to drivers in Orange County.

The agency also said 47 pedestrians were killed in Orange County in 2017.

Best Foot Forward said 2017 is shaping up to be one of the deadliest years for pedestrian deaths.

Population growth and more cars on Central Florida roads could be contributing.

Drivers who do not stop at pedestrian crosswalks could receive a warning as others will receive a $164 ticket and three points on their driver's license.
