A fast-growing brush fire in western Flagler has grown to about 40 acres and caused partial evacuations in the Daytona North community.

  • Fast-growing fire burning in western Flagler County
  • Fire began at about 2 p.m. in area of Cypress and Lemon streets
  • Abandoned trailer destroyed in the fire, officials said

The fire started at about 2 p.m. on a 2-acre parcel in the area of Cypress and Lemon streets. It quickly grew to about 35 acres, according to the Florida Forest Service.

The fire is about 80 percent contained and dots the area between Mahogany Boulevard to the north and Walnut Avenue to the south. It's moving west toward Avocado Boulevard.

"We are having difficulty getting this (fire) under control with these dry, windy conditions," Flagler County Fire Chief Don Petito said in a statement. "It's jumping road after road."

It's unclear whether the fire began in an abandoned trailer or if the trailer burned because of the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Flames have threatened several structures Friday afternoon. Because homes in the area are spread out — including some with vacant lots between the houses — residents are being notified individually about evacuating.

"We are urging residents to take immediate precautions and prepare the things they might need to take with them if they are asked to leave their homes," County Administrator Craig Coffey said.

Crews from Flagler County, Bunnell, Palm Coast and the Florida Forest Service. Flagler County's FireFlight helicopter has been dropping buckets of water on the fire and has been providing reconnaissance for firefighters on the ground.
