Dry weather conditions are still causing flare-ups from a wildfire that has been burning in Flagler County since Friday.

The wildfire is 95 percent contained, according to officials.

It started at an abandoned home in the unincorporated area of Flagler County near Beech Boulevard.

The fire spread across 35 acres, threatening homes and lives. Some people were forced to leave their homes. Two dogs were also burned in the wildfire.

Ashley, an 8-year-old hound, and Harley, a 5-year-old Great Dane, were taken to Flagler Animal Hospital. Ashley is now able to stand on his hind leg, but he is still in excruciating pain from the burns on his body.

“He has significant burns to almost half of his body, his legs are about nine percent burned and head about 18 percent,” said Payne.

Harley was released back to his owner, but Ashley remains in the care of the veterinarians.

"I can't imagine what it would be like to be burned, I truly don't know, that's why he's on morphine constantly around the clock. I can't imagine losing your home potentially losing your pet," said Payne.

According to the Flagler Humane Society, Ashley’s owner decided to sign him over to the organization. Payne said he will need a permanent home. Donations are needed to help pay for his expensive medical treatment.

"Ashley's bills are going to be significantly higher than that just because of the intensity of his care," said Payne. "Those full thickness burns, slough off, they're going to look worst before they get better and long term he will have some significant scarring. It's so important because we've gone this far he's fighting so he needs the money so we can keep going for him."

Fire mitigation specialist Julie Allen said 35 homes were saved, but one abandoned home was destroyed.

“It’s very unfortunate that it happened and we’re definitely thinking about that family and their pets and hoping it turns out well for the animals,” said Allen. “Gratefully no one was injured, none of our firefighters were injured.”

Crews continued to work on the fire Sunday, trying to keep hot spots from sparking flames.

The cause of the wildfire remains under investigation.
