Volunteers at two Lake County schools are washing clothes every week to help families in need.

Eustis Heights Elementary and Triangle Elementary School in Mount Dora now have laundry facilities.

Every Friday, 12 students in the laundry program drop off dirty clothes that volunteers wash, dry and fold.

More than 60 students at both schools are identified as homeless and many are on free or reduced-price lunch.

"You’re looking at clothes that haven’t been washed in a very long time. These kids come to school with very dirty clothes things stuck on them, just really, they smell," said Abby Hartmann, the school psychologist and one of the three women who created the program.

Modeled after a similar program in California, the women helped raise money for two dryers and two washers at each school.

By the end of the school year, school officials hope to let families use the facilities while students will be able to meet with a tutor.
