The body found buried in a Deltona yard last week has been identified as the wife of a man who shot himself, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said.

On May 9, Laurence Caulfield, 75, shot himself and left a handwritten note that he killed his wife, Gail Caulfield, 75.  He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The shooting happened after deputies visited the home on Canterbury Street for a well-being check.

Once inside, deputies found the note Laurence Caulfield has written, claiming he had buried his wife in the yard.

According to investigators, Gail Caulfield suffered from Alzheimer’s.

Investigators found the body of a woman in the yard on May 10.

The Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified the woman as Gail Caulfield.
