Christmas in July is common, especially when it comes to giving to children in need, as well as those who are still kids at heart.

"So many people think of Christmas just for kids. So the seniors kind of get left out," says Megan Miller, an administrative assistant for the West Melbourne Police Department.

In the past, she helped the Senior Santa program, donating a few general items to local seniors in nursing homes during Christmastime.

But last year, she got a specific request that melted her heart.

"It was this older lady wanting blue nail polish, and Butterfingers," Miller tells News 13 with a smile. "I thought, 'What a sweet request' and I kind of want to hang out with her."

With the seed planted, Miller decided to begin a Christmas in July for seniors.

"They don't have family in town, or anyone to buy them a gift," Miller explained, adding that she and co-workers compiled a list of 25 items.

"Baseball caps, nightgowns," Miller says of the list. In addition, adult coloring books, blankets and bath sets.

They took to social media to spread the word and it did like wildfire. Before they knew it, dozens of donated goodies came in, given by the community.

And Miller realizes it took a community to make this happen.

"It was my thought of doing this, but there's no way I would have bought all of this," she says as she points to gifts under the Christmas tree in the WMPD lobby.

All the gifts will be handed out at the nursing homes over the Christmas holiday.
