Imagine traveling from Orlando to Miami and vice-versa in less than 30 minutes.

  • Miami-Orlando route among 10 finalist in Hyperloop project
  • Passengers could travel the 257-mile route in less than 30 minutes
  • Hyperloop officials will work with each team to develop proposals

A proposed high-speed-rail route between the two Florida cities is one step closer to becoming a reality.

The 257-mile Miami-Orlando route placed among the top 10 finalists in the Hyperloop One Global Challenge, a project backed by billionaire Elon Musk.

“The Hyperloop One Global Challenge started as a call of action for innovators, engineers, trailblazers and dreamers around the world who shared our vision of creating a new mode of transportation,” said Shervin Pishevar, in a news release.

With Hyperloop One transit, passengers and cargo are loaded into a pod which gradually accelerates through a low-pressure tube.

Three other U.S. routes placed as finalist: a route that connects Chicago to Columbus, Ohio and Pittsburgh; a route that connects Dallas and Houston; and a route that connects Cheyenne, Wyo., Pueblo, Colo., and Denver.

Hyperloop One will work with each winning team and host in-country workshops to help them develop their proposals.

The team will be provided resources that will help them create ridership forecasts, business case and preliminary analysis.
