A Volusia County man faces charges after he reportedly struck another man in the face with the flat side of a machete following an argument Monday morning in the parking lot of a Bank of America, police said.

  • Fight broke out in Bank of America parking lot in DeLand
  • 2 men got into a verbal argument that turned physical
  • Man is accused of striking the other man with a machete

The incident began at about 11:23 a.m. at the branch located at 230 N. Woodland Blvd. in DeLand.

DeLand Police officers were called to the bank because of a report of a fight in the parking lot. The victim, identified as George Dominguez, said he was walking through the parking lot when another man, later identified as 70-year-old Arlen Hubbard, appeared to drive to close to him, almost hitting Dominguez with the vehicle.

Dominguez told police that he confronted Hubbard about his driving and “banged” on the driver’s window, a police report states.

Dominguez told police that a verbal argument ensued, which then turned physical after Hubbard exited his vehicle. The two began to push each other, and that’s when Hubbard reportedly took a machete out and cut Dominguez “across the face,” police said. The fight ended after Dominguez was cut in the face with the machete, police said. Dominguez did tell police at the scene that he didn’t wish to pursue charges, according to the charging affidavit.

Hubbard told police that he felt Dominguez was attempting to “take him to the ground,” and said he struck the man with the “flat side” of the machete. Hubbard said he attempted to render first aid to Dominguez by giving him tissues to stop the bleeding.

Police said the bank was unable to provide video surveillance from the area.

Hubbard was arrested and charged aggravated battery. He was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
